St. Agatha as seen from Long Lake
The Town of St. Agatha, Maine, Aroostook County (Maine's largest county and the largest county east of the Mississippi river) is situated in the heart of the St. John Valley and at the northeastern end of beautiful Long Lake on the Fish River Chain and a few miles south of the international border.
St. Agatha is bounded on the north and west by the town of Frenchville. The Town of Madawaska and Long Lake adjoins St. Agatha on the east. Unorganized Township 17 Ranges 4 and 5 (T17 - R4 & R5) forms its southern border. Its access highway is state route #162. Topographic data for the community indicates that St. Agatha 68 degrees 17" West Longitude , 47 degrees 15" North Latitude; 615' altitude at lake level and 1100' altitude at the highest point, and the average altitude is 800'. St. Agatha is approximately 29 square miles in area totaling approximately 20,851 acres, of which 17,267 acres is land, 3,584 acres is inland water, and 832 acres is natural wetland.
Population Characteristics:
The people of St. Agatha are primarily of French-Acadian descent, a proud & rich cultural heritage well rooted throughout the St. John Valley. Residents possess strong family ties which emanates throughout the community. Visitors and new residents note the hospitality and kindness which abounds when experiencing their stay in the Village. It is common to be greeted by strangers and passers-by as you travel through St. Agatha as a welcoming gesture.
Community Development
The Village provides for a safe and comfortable family living atmosphere. From the beautiful lakeshore properties prevalent throughout the community to the rural homes located along rolling hillsides offer many opportunities for home seekers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle each day may bring. Small businesses have found economic prosperity here in St. Agatha along with small commercial industries. The community boasts two modern housing projects for the elderly and physically challenged.
